This land we call Pezihutazizi Kapi (the place where they dig for yellow medicine) has been the homeland for our people, the Dakota Oyate (Nation), for thousands of years.
We have always occupied this area bordering the Minnesota River Valley, with the exception of a short period of time in the late 1800's following the U.S./Dakota War of 1862. At that time, our people were either exterminated, fled to avoid imprisonment and death, or were forcibly removed to reservations located beyond the state boarders of Minnesota.
Small numbers of Dakota started to return to Pezihutazizi around 1890 and formed communities along the Minnesota River south of Granite Falls.
After the Indian Reorganization Act our ancestors in the Dakota community at Pezihutazizi became recogniced by the Federal Government as the Upper Sioux Community in 1938. Since that time our community has continued to grow and change as all things do.
This site is a small representation of our nation, both the past and the present. It contains memories and knowledge to be shared amongst our people.
